Tom B

lyrics

old tom b he was an old man
I knew him once upon a time
he had to family he had no home
that suited tom just fine
he said, "son, don't you ask me why,
I'll bet you've never seen me cry"

he'd sit in the park and I'd bum him a smoke
we'd talk politics and drink wine
the sun would go down and old tom he'd smile
throw back that bottle and finish the wine
and say, "son, don't you ask me why,
I'll just smile for now and say goodnight"

but I did see him crying he was on a park bench
sittin' all alone late one night
I asked old tom, "hey what could be wrong?"
but he just looked up and smiled
he said, "son, don't you ask me why,
sometimes you gotta hang your head a while"

I moved away but never forgot old tom
how could I forget a friend of mine?
but the folks around there, they said he was crazy
crazy for drinking all that wine
but he said, "people, don't you ask me why,
I'll bet I'm smiling on the day I die"

when they found old tom he was on that park bench
slumped over that bottle of wine
I hung my head and shed a tear for tom
then I just remembered him and I smiled
I said, "people, don't you ask me why,
I'll just smile for now and say goodbye"
